SCitizen

Welcome to the new home of SCitizen.

Interested in learning about the social, political, and cultural issues of Los Angeles? Want to actively support your local community? Looking for personal interactions with USC faculty members?

The SCitizen Welcome Week Program is a component of USC's First Contact Initiative, sponsored by the Provost's Office. The purpose of the First Contact Initiative is to enhance the interaction between USC's faculty and undergraduate students. SCitizen is an immersion experience in service learning, which allows students to explore the diverse possibilities for volunteerism in the city of Los Angeles during their initial week on campus.

"Service learning and volunteerism are key parts of the USC educational experience, and we urge you to become involved in this unique opportunity." -- Dr. Gene Bickers, Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs

(new!) SCitizen: February Service Opportunity

Free Arts: Promoting Literacy Through the Arts
In conjunction with the Community Development Commission of the County of Los Angeles and the Free Arts for Abused Children, student participants will have an opportunity to work with children from local housing facilities in creating art projects made from environmentally sustainable materials. Faculty facilitators will include Mark Lieberman and Patrick Henry from the Marshall School of Business. This SCitizen project coincides with the Volunteer Center’s February Service Day theme of “Youth and Literacy.”

About Free Arts:
Free Arts for Abused Children is a nonprofit organization that integrates the healing and therapeutic power of the arts into the lives of children and youth who have been abused or families who have been designated as “at risk”.

Free Arts recruits, trains and places volunteers to work hands-on with victims of abuse. Dance, drama, writing, music, and painting are just some of the avenues of creativity used to encourage abused children and youth to channel their emotions, release anger and develop positive methods of communication.
