Service-learning and Cultural Exchange
Objective: Participants will travel to Kampala, Uganda to work with the Amagezi Gemaanyi Youth Association (A.G.Y.A.) for a co-curricular service learning alternative break trip. Promoting active participation and international awareness, this trip will teach students how to learn and develop through action-oriented service that meets community needs and teaches students important lessons about Ugandan culture. Unlike academic service learning, the co-curricular service-learning model is not anchored in a specific course, and entails a structured "reflection" time, thus allowing students to evaluate, assess, and share the service experience with their home communities.
Tentative Itinerary: Trip participants will engage in a series of action-oriented projects:
· Develop student-led curriculums in order to facilitate arts and educational workshops; students are required to spend at least 3 days per week leading a workshop with Ugandan students
· Facilitate painting, poetry writing, song-writing, and photography classes
· Play soccer, basketball, badminton, jump rope and other recreational games
· Participate in the A.G.Y.A. Free Lunch Program Volunteer Activities
·Facilitate and participate in discussion forums with Ugandan youth
· Tutor A.G.Y.A. participants in English and math lessons
· Complete a community service project with Nabulagala Good Hope Primary School
Additionally, students will observe Ugandan culture, have opportunities to travel around the area, interact with the community, and develop basic, introductory language skills.
Applications are available in HSH 100 or by email.
