Alternative Spring Break - Retalhuleu [Reu], Guatemala

Retalhuleu [Reu], Guatemala - Cultural Exchange and Community Development

The main objective of the trip is to educate students about social issues, primarily focusing on education and cultural exchange in Guatemala. Students will work in a local school that has named the USC Volunteer Center its patron. In the evenings, students will discuss their observations of the Guatemalan way of life and have the chance to reflect upon their daily experiences. There will also be opportunities to visit sights to gain a thorough understanding of the Guatemalan culture. The overall experience will help provide the necessary knowledge and incentive to be active in community service activities in Los Angeles and all over the world.

It is important that students who live in a wealthy country such as the United States understand that poverty is a serious issue around the globe. The impact of seeing poverty first-hand does not compare to reading about it in the news. In addition to learning about poverty, students will be engaging in a cultural exchange with the Guatemalan people. With the United States and Guatemala so far apart, the opportunity for contact is limited. This trip provides an invaluable experience, helping to break down stereotypes while presenting students with a one of a kind spring break journey.

The trip will encompass a diverse itinerary of service projects and cultural activities. In past years, we have spent time on various beautification projects at the school, explored a local coffee plantation, basked in the beauty of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and experienced the ruins at a local Mayan archaeological site as well as the famous ancient ruins of Tikal.

If you are interested in participating in the trip of a life-time, learning about a new culture, and making a difference in the world, this trip is for you.
