Alternative Spring Break - Isla de las Mujeres

Located 20 minutes off the Mexican peninsula, Isla de las Mujeres was once a religious sanctuary. Yet long before Cancun was even a glint in developer's eyes, the island opened its arms to tourists from around the world. While visitors provided a steady cash flow to the locals, the conflict between culture and tourism was evident early on. This Alternative Spring Break trip seeks to work with island residents to emphasize cultural awareness on the island.

Students will participant with a variety of activities including beach clean-ups, working with children, beautifying and fixing up schools, as well as other environmental activities.

Evenings on the island are filled with fun and culture as the group enjoys fabulous island cuisine or in the town square. Volunteers are educated about the history of Isla de las Mujeres and participate in authentic cultural activities.
