Alternative Spring Break

In March of 1991, students and staff of the University of Southern California created Alternative Spring Break (ASB). It was their belief that students who participated in ASB would make a significant change in their lives as well as the community.

Since that time, Alternative Spring Break has evolved into an intensive 5 to 6 day community service-learning program that is designed to introduce students to diverse communities and an array of important social issues in multiple locations. ASB combines service projects, with information on the social, cultural and historical context of the pressing social conditions which they will experience throughout the week. In addition to this, there are opportunities for discussion and reflection that allow students the opportunity to consider new and/or different perspectives about these social problems.

Currently, the Volunteer Center has trips to (click the link to read more about the trip):

These trips are offered to student participants for a fee, which includes transportation, boarding, meals, and most cultural activities for the week.

Some students have said this about their experience:

“I only have good things to say about last year's trip! I learned so much about the Navajo culture of course, but more than that I learned to have an appreciation for nature and was reminded of the importance of slowing down and enjoying life. After the trip I was less stressed, happier, and was able to concentrate better. Also, I met such wonderful people and am still in touch with many of them.”

“Going to Isla changed my perspective on life. It re-enforced my love of community service and made me realize how much the little things count. It broadened my understanding of Mexican culture and my appreciation for diversity. I learned more about what I wanted from life and from friendships. I wouldn't have wanted to spend my Spring Break any other way. ”
