The Department of State and J-1 visa regulations require all Exchange Visitors and accompanying J-2 dependent(s) to be covered by adequate health and accident insurance while in this country. Failure to carry adequate insurance may lead to termination of your Exchange Visitor status. Two American companies which offer acceptable health insurance plans specifically developed for participants in international educational activities are:

Insurance coverage can begin on the date you depart for the United States or any time soon thereafter. Approximate cost for this coverage ranges from $70 to $140 or more per month. Insurance coverage for J-2 dependents may increase these costs significantly.
If you are being paid by USC you may be provided health and accident insurance as part of the USC benefits program and will not need to purchase an additional policy. Check with your sponsoring academic department or institute for further information.
