J-1 visa regulations require OIS to “validate” the J-1 record NO LATER than 30 days following the Program Start Date as listed in the SEVIS database. It is critical that your J-1 scholar reports to the Office of International Services shortly after arrival on campus. Please have your scholar call OIS at (213) 740-2666 to schedule a 15 minute appointment for a “J-1 Check-in.” This should be one of the first things newly arrived J-1’s attend to.
During the J-1 Check-in process we will collect copies of your scholar’s immigration documents and their current local address. We will also give your scholar a letter to apply for the Social Security number, if necessary. In addition we can answer any questions your scholar may have regarding issues like housing, transportation and adjustment to life in Los Angeles.
