How early can J-1’s arrive? How late can they leave?

J-1 Scholars are allowed to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the Program Start Date listed on the DS-2019.  This grace period allows the scholar to arrive prior to the start of scheduled academic activities at USC so they may find housing, apply for the SSN, buy a car and otherwise adjust to life in Los Angeles.  OIS’ practice is to amend the Program Start Date to match the scholar’s arrival date once the scholar has completed the mandatory J-1 Check-in with our office.  This allows the scholar to begin teaching or research immediately following check-in.

Exchange Visitors may also remain in the U.S. for up to 30 days following the Program End Date listed on the DS-2019 form.  This grace period is meant to allow the scholar time to complete any final domestic travel or sightseeing.  The time can also be used to make preparations to return home such as selling a car, completing a lease period, etc.  J-1 scholars are NOT allowed to be paid during this period and should not use the time to continue their research.  If more time is needed to complete their academic endeavors you should request an extension of the DS-2019.
