How do I request a DS-2019?

The DS-2019 is the “certificate of eligibility” for J-1 status. All Exchange Visitors must have this document in order to receive the J-1 visa. J-1 degree-seeking students receive the DS-2019 from the Office of International Admissions with their admission letter or shortly thereafter. All other J-1 categories (Research Scholar, Non-Degree Student, etc.) are issued a DS-2019 by the Office of International Services following the sponsoring academic department's request.

The following are just a few things to keep in mind when requesting a new DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for J-1 Status:

  • Processing time in OIS is 10 business days
  • All new and transfer DS-2019’s require an internal requisition from the department to OIS for $250. There is a $100 charge for DS-2019 extensions.
  • The minimum levels of support are $18,000/year ($1,500/month) for J-1 Exchange Visitors, $7,000/year for J-2 spouses, and $3,500/year per J-2 child. This is a combined total from all funding sources.

To request a DS-2019 please complete the DS-2019 request.
