How do I bring a J-1 scholar to USC?

  • Department and potential Exchange Visitor communicate regarding a possible visit
  • Department decides to invite the Exchange Visitor
  • Department requests 10-digit USC ID number for scholar via USC Payroll (employees) or iVIP databse (non-employees)
  • Department submits DS-2019 request to OIS along with $250 internal requisition
  • 10 business days later OIS will contact the department to pick-up the DS-2019 in STU 300 (except in the case of transfers)
  • Department mails DS-2019 to Exchange Visitor
  • Exchange visitor completes form I-901 and pays the SEVIS fee online
  • Exchange Visitor goes to any U.S. embassy or consulate to request visa
  • Exchange Visitor enters the U.S. with Passport, Visa, and DS-2019
  • Exchange Visitor checks in with OIS within 3 days of arrival at USC
  • OIS available to Exchange Visitor and department for questions and advice during visitor’s stay
