It is relatively simple to extend the DS-2019. The sponsoring academic department should complete the Extended DS-2019 Request Form and submit the form along with the $100 extension fee (paid via internal requisition). Processing time in OIS is 10 business days, but we will try to complete the request as soon as possible.
You may request an extension up to the maximum period of participation for your Exchange Visitor’s J-1 category:
| Research Scholar / Professor |
5 years |
| Short-Term Scholar |
6 months |
| Non-Degree Student |
2 years |
It is often desirable to request a longer extension period than to submit multiple (shorter) extension requests. This practice will save both the sponsoring department and the J-1 money in OIS and visa application fees. It will also help the scholar receive a longer validity period when renewing her or his J-1 visa abroad.
OIS does not need to see proof of funding information for the new period. However, you should be confident that funding is available or likely to be renewed during the period for which you are requesting the extension. Furthermore, the J-1 visa is not a contract of employment. As the sponsoring academic department you may ask OIS to shorten the DS-2019 at any time.
Please be aware of the difference between status and visa:
Status is the legal right to remain in the United States in a given immigration classification, in this case, J-1. The dates on the scholar’s DS-2019 determine J-1 status.
A visa is an entry permit issued by a United States Embassy or Consulate abroad. The J-1 visa must be valid to allow the bearer to enter the United States. However, it may expire anytime after the J-1 has arrived with no adverse effect on the scholar’s J-1 status.
