The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN).
The ITIN is used primarily for tax filing purposes, and it is not a form of work authorization.
F-1/J-1 students who receive a USC scholarship or fellowship and who are not eligible for the SSN are required to obtain an ITIN.
How to Apply for an ITIN
F-1/J-1 Students with USC scholarship or fellowship:
- Students must submit the ITIN letter request form to OIS
- In 2 business days, the ITIN letter will be ready for pick up at OIS
- Students must take this ITIN letter to the USC Payroll Office as they will assist with the ITIN application.
All other individuals can follow the ITIN Application procedures outlined in the IRS website.
