Can I attend the Preview Day even if I have not been admitted to USC?
Yes. We know that many academic departments will not make admissions decisions by February 19th. Candidates that have submitted a complete application to their specific USC graduate program AND have completed our online application (which includes submitting a cover letter, resume and references) may attend the Preview Day.

I am currently enrolled in a graduate program at USC. How do I apply for a new position? Am I eligible to participate in the Preview Day?
Current students must still submit an application through the Graduate Student Employment Opportunities website. If you submitted an application last year, you may update your application for the current process. If you cannot find your application, please email us at gradjobs@usc.edu and a link to your application will be emailed to you. Applications completed by February 1st will be given priority consideration. Preview Day is generally reserved for new, incoming students. If the number of incoming students who rsvp to Preview Day is low, we may consider allowing current students to interview at this event. However, most current students will be interviewed the week before and after Preview Day. These interviews will be arranged by the individual hiring departments. Departments will determine who they wish to interview and will contact those candidates directly.

Is this the only application I need to fill out?
No, all applicants must have also applied to their specific USC graduate program (or already be enrolled). Also, some of our departments have supplemental applications (as noted on the job listing page). Please remember that you must fill out the online employment application AND upload your cover letter and resume.

How do I schedule an interview?
Once a candidate has completed their applications, it become available for employers to review. When an employer identifies a candidate they would like to interview, one of two things happens: 1) If the candidate is attending the Preview Day, the employer submits the candidates name to the Graduate Student Experience Committee and a master schedule of interviews is created. Candidates will be given their interview schedule when they check-in at Preview Day. 2) If the candidate is NOT attending Preview Day, the employer will contact the candidate directly to set up an interview. These interviews may be over the phone or on the USC campus.

What if I missed the priority deadline and am not eligible for the Preview Day?
Candidates who have completed the USC graduate application for their specific program , a graduate program and the Graduate Student Employment Opportunity process will be given first consideration for available positions. Applications will continue to be considered until all positions are filled and later openings frequently occur throughout the summer and occasionally during the academic year. Therefore, additional candidates and all alternates not hired initially will be considered for later openings. Candidates who do not attend the Preview Day can be interviewed over the telephone or in person.

What happens at the Preview Day?
Candidates will have the opportunity to interview for up to three positions. Most of the interviews are conducted in a format similar to those at ACPA and NASPA. During times when candidates are not interviewing, you will have the chance to take a campus tour and attend a few information sessions. There will be a luncheon and an early-evening reception. Candidates are responsible for all travel costs associated with attending the Preview Day; however, there is not a cost for attending the event. Meals will include a continental breakfast, lunch, and the reception.

What do I need to bring to the Preview Day?
Employers will have copies of your application materials, but some candidates prefer to bring copies of their resumes with them on their own paper. You might want to bring a pad of paper and a pen to take note during our information sessions. Meals will be provided, but there is a coffee shop near the interview area. This cafe does not take debit or credit cards so please bring cash if you would like to purchase beverages or snacks.

I am attending the Preview Day. Do you have any recommendations for where I can stay while I am in town?
There is a Radisson directly across the street from campus and a Holiday Inn just down the road. More information on these hotels and others in the area can be found at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/parents/images/PlacestoStayinLA.pdf Additionally, some of our current graduate students have offered to host candidate. Spaces are limited and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. However, priority for these spaces will be given to candidates traveling from outside the Southern California area. If you would like to stay with a current student, please email us at GradJobs@usc.edu

I'm interested in a position that does not have any anticipated vacancies listed. Should I still apply?
Yes, please indicate your interest in all positions on your application. Anticipated vacancies are difficult to determine and positions often come open unexpectedly. When a vacancy occurs, employers look on the GradJobs website and check to see which candidates have expressed interest. So, if you are interested in a position that appears to be closed for the upcoming year, please still indicate your preference on your application.

I am not from the Southern California area. Where can I find more information about living in Los Angeles?
We have created a document called "Life in LA" that will answer many questions about housing, transportation, entertainment, etc...in the L.A. and USC area. The document can be found at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/private/docs/life_in_la.pdf

When do I find out if I have been hired for a position?
Departments will contact candidates directly beginning in early April. We can only offer positions to candidates who have been accepted into a graduate program at USC. We hope to have all positions filled by the end of April; however, additional openings typically become available during the summer.

How long is the contract for the position?
Most positions are for the fall and spring semesters only. Some positions have summer work available. Generally, students are hired for one year and may be rehired for an additional year.

Are there other positions available that are not posted on the website?
Sometimes. Occasionally, new positions are created and we try to update our website on a regular basis. You can always send an email to us at GradJobs@usc.edu to inquire about any unposted positions.
