& Volunteer Opportunities
Reading to Kids Opportunity for USC students
Description: Reading to Kids is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring
underserved children with a love of reading by helping
them become better readers. We coordinate reading clubs at five elementary
schools in downtown Los Angeles where
volunteers read aloud to children and create arts and crafts projects about
the stories. Each child receives a book to take
home and the books read aloud are donated to the school's library. The
reading clubs are held on
the second Saturday of every month from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
In order to conduct these reading clubs on the second Saturday of every
month, we rely on the enthusiasm and
dedication of 200-300 volunteers each month. We would love for you and your
group to join us in making a difference in
our local community!
Each year we hold College Spirit Day at our November reading clubs to
encourage students to think about college.
Early exposure instills a sense of excitement and anticipation surrounding
college, and for many of our students, they will
be the first in their families to seek a higher education. We ask our
volunteers to come wearing their favorite college's
gear, and the school with the most participation gets bragging rights until
next year!
Our November 11th reading clubs would be a great opportunity for your group
to start volunteering and show you school
spirit! If you are interested in volunteering with Reading to Kids, you can
visit our website at www.readingtokids.org for
more information and to sign up online. For more information on how to
volunteer as a group, please contact our
Program Coordinator, Sarah Kolterman, by e-mail at
Sarah.Kolterman@readingtokids.org or by phone at (310)
479-7455. Thank you for your time, and we look forward to seeing you at the
College Spirit Day reading clubs!

Volunteers Needed for Spring Break El Salvador 2007
Description: As the second annual USC spring break trip to El Salvador, we will take 22 undergraduates to El Salvador, not as tourists, but as guests of the communities, working to promote cultural awareness and solidarity. The focus of the trip will be education; specifically, we will visit both public and private schools, distribute school supplies, and teach English lessons.
We will begin our trip in San Salvador, where we will visit historical sites and a war memorial commemorating the recent civil war. The majority of our trip will be spent at homestays in the rural community of Santa Marta, where the students will have the opportunity to view life from a perspective outside of their geographic, political, and cultural boundaries.
For more information visit our website:
http://www-scf.usc.edu/~mgetz/Spring_Break_El_Salvador.htm
Or email us at: elsalvador2007@gmail.com

PAID VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Dear NALEO Friend:
The NALEO Educational Fund's Voces Del Pueblo Program is seeking motivated individuals to work as paid campaign phone canvassers and phone operators for our 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA hotline. We are looking for current, responsible high school seniors, college students and individuals who are interested in encouraging the Latino community to participate in the upcoming November 7, elections. The Voces Del Pueblo campaign will begin on October 14 and continue through Election Day.
The NALEO Educational Fund was established in 1981 to empower Latinos to participate fully in the American political process. The NALEO Educational Fund carries out this mission by developing and implementing programs that promote the integration of Latinos into the American political process, developing future leaders among Latino youth, providing assistance and training to the nation's Latino elected and appointed officials, and conducting research on issues important to the Latino community.
The Los Angeles office is currently seeking several paid volunteers to work with the Voces Del Pueblo Program. The program is a non-partisan voter engagement program seeking to create new Latino voters by targeting its efforts on engaging and mobilizing infrequent Latino voters, newly registered voters, and young voters. Volunteers will serve as the direct contact between the NALEO Educational Fund and Latino voters, through live telephone calls to motivate and invite voters to play a critical role in local, statewide, and federal elections.
Duties Include:
* Contacting Latino voters over the phone and motivating them to vote.
* Informing callers on electoral information.
* Assisting campaign staff in administrative activities related to voter mobilization and overall civic engagement.
Requirements:
* Bilingual (Spanish)
* Good communications skills
* Able to sit for long periods of time
* Minimal computer skills
* No experience necessary (training is provided)
Stipend: $7-8 an Hour – depending on experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to make a difference in their community and want to earn some extra money.
Trainings will be scheduled beginning the week of October 9th.
If you or anyone you know that might be interested or would like further information can contact me at 213-747-7606 ext. 148 or by email at jmarcus@naleo.org.

Help out a student with a project about Spanish in Los Angeles
Description: As part of the project I am interested in speaking with bilinguals (English/Spanish) who were born here in the United States and who identify themselves as Mexican-American (i.e. whose parents or grandparents are from Mexico). I am interested in speaking with bilinguals who are 18 years or older, and they do not have to be USC students or even students!
This would just be an informal chat that I would record, and I would ask them some questions and ask them to tell me a story, something very general.
This project is not funded, so I am looking for people willing to donate an hour of their time!
I would appreciate if you could let me know of anyone interested in helping out with this important community project.
