Topic: “Music and Identity: The Case of Black Anthems”
This month will discuss the ways in which music has been, and continues to be, used by those within the African Diaspora to express and negotiate racial, cultural, and political identities through an analysis of the development and proliferation of Black anthems in the twentieth century.
Prof. Shana L. Redmond is Assistant Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. She is currently working on her manuscript, Anthem, focusing on 20th century black music as a political articulation of identity, labor, and radicalism.
