Somerville Place 20th Anniversary: Twenty Years of Excellence

Somerville Place became the first-year African American special interest community named after John and Vada Somerville, the first African American graduates of the University of Southern California, Ostrow School of Dentistry. For the past twenty years, Somerville Place has housed (574) first-year African American students and thirty-five resident assistants/program coordinators. To commemorate this achievement, the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs (CBCSA) and Somerville Scholars would like you to join us at the Somerville Place 20th Anniversary Banquet Celebration on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the Ronald Tutor Campus Center Ballroom at 7:00 pm to kick off HOMECOMING 2015 events and festivities. Alternative Spring Break Applications

We are accepting applications for our Alternative Spring Break: The Civil Rights Movement trip that will take place March 10-17, 2016. This service learning and cultural immersion trip is open to ALL USC students and is a great opportunity to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and about issues affecting communities in the South. Cities that will be visited include Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee. Service options include school immersions at local elementary schools and service with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, AL. If you are interested in participating in this trip please complete the attached application and email it to or fax it to (213) 740.3298. You can also drop off the application to the CBCSA office located in the Student Union, Suite 415, Monday-Friday between 8:30am-5:00pm. Feel free to share this information with other USC students that may be interested in participating in the trip.

A Resident Assistant is a live-in part-time position for undergraduates or graduate students interested in serving as a guide and resource for the student populations living in our first-year and upper-division halls as well as our graduate and family apartments. If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity to become a Resident Assistant please attend one of our information sessions to learn more about the position, the benefits, and the selection process: INFORMATION SESSIONS: Any interested candidate should attend an Info Session – you only have to attend ONE, but we have set up six (6) for your convenience.
