Different campus entities provide learning workshops, counseling, or mentorship models to help student cope with the stress associated with higher education.  It is particularly important for first year students to identify appropriate campus resources and professionals trained to help them.  These campus departments provide different intervention strategies useful for both specific areas of the population and for students at large.

Center for Academic Support, Support Groups
The Center for Academic Support, in collaboration with the USC Student Counseling Center, offers several support groups to interested students. Support groups offer a small group format in which peers facing similar issues can come together in a safe, confidential arena to develop strategies for overcoming challenges in their lives. The sessions are facilitated by a professional staff member, and usually meet once a week.

To join a support group, students may sign up online at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/asn. You can contact the CAS at (213)740-0776, or by email at study@usc.edu.

Counseling Services (CS)
USC Counseling Services is dedicated to providing students a broad range of quality programs to assist them during their time at USC. All services reflect a strong commitment to diversity and to the individual needs of students on the University Park campus. Through self-reflection, evaluation by national accrediting agencies, and students’ feedback, CS continues to enhance its support system. After an initial intake meeting with a counselor, students may be deferred to individual counseling sessions or group counseling.

If you are a student at the University Park Campus, you may schedule an intake appointment at any time by visiting the SHC building or calling (213)740-7711

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Mentor Program
The Mentoring Program provides empathic peer mentors for students facing these issues. These mentors have grown through their own coming out experiences and are secure with their own sexual orientation. Mentors seek to help make the coming out process an empowering, positive experience. This is accomplished through honest, compassionate, genuine, and informal one-on-one conversations, in which support and information are provided. Further, mentors serve as role models and also provide resource information to guide the mentee in the coming out process.

To get more information regarding the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Mentor Program, please visit their website at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/glbss/support.html or call (213)740-7619.

Group Counseling
Group counseling provides a safe and confidential place to share and explore concerns as well as receive support with various issues. The group typically consists of 6-10 students and 2 trained counselors. There are different kinds of groups offered in Counseling Services, such as process-oriented groups, support groups, and structured groups.

To view a list of current counseling groups, please visit http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/cs.group.counseling.shtml.  Once you have identified a group, call (213)740-7711 and ask to speak to the facilitator of the group you are interested in joining.

Inside-Track Mentoring
A mentoring program that connects established student leaders with incoming freshman. The primary goal of the program is to develop future leaders by providing support and guidance for new students, increasing awareness of campus and community support, informing students of campus and community resources and creating a network of leaders at USC. For more information, e-mail usclead@usc.edu or call (213)740-1477.

Learning Enrichment Workshops
The Center for Academic Support offers free lunchtime Learning Enrichment Workshops on topics relevant to academic success and making the transition to college. Topics include test-taking anxiety, memory enhancement, time management, and more.  Furthermore, during the workshops, students receive learning materials and tools to assistant them in developing more effective study skills. Students attending a workshop should be prepared to share questions or challenges they have faced in order to get the most out of the session.

Peer Experiences, Enriching Relationships (PEER) Student Mentoring
The Asian/Pacific American PEER program is a collaborative project between Asian/Pacific American Student Services (APASS) and USC Student Counseling Services. PEER matches continuing APA students with first-year students (freshmen and transfers) in a one-on-one mentoring relationship. The relationship is designed to help first-year students adjust to campus life, become more familiar with university resources, and successfully negotiate personal issues that may arise by having a reliable mentor to talk with.
If you are a first-year Asian/Pacific American student and are interested in this program, please visit the program’s website, and feel free to contact APASS at (213)740-4999 or e-mail apass@usc.edu

Psychiatry
Counseling Services employs two psychiatrists who collaborate with counselors to provide mental health services to students. After an evaluation, the psychiatrist may recommend healthy lifestyle changes, supplements, and/or prescribe medication.  Access to psychiatric services is only by referral from a counselor.

If you are a student on the University Park campus, you may schedule an intake appointment at any time by visiting the SHC building or calling (213)740-7711.
