Academic services include workshops and seminars, one-on-one tutoring, special accommodations for students with disabilities, support groups, and individual appointments with academic counselors.  A meeting with an academic advisor can help students identify which classes they should take and in what sequence, learn how to balance course loads and choose possible majors for different careers.  Moreover, aside from understanding course requirements, developing strong studying skills and learning where to find tutoring services or learning enhancement tools enrich any student’s collegiate education.

Center for Academic Support
The Center for Academic Support is the central resource and referral agency for learning enrichment at USC. Upper division students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and volunteers at USC coordinate a program of mentoring and academic enrichment in a university-wide effort to address student needs.

Academic Support contributes a collaborative approach to learning within the academic community. We offer learning assistance and tutoring in various subjects for USC students at selected locations on campus, including residential sites. Academic success seminars and workshops are scheduled throughout the academic year.  Services include:

  • Tutoring and Learning Assistance
  • Learning Enrichment Workshops
  • Student Support Groups
  • General Academic Support Counseling
  • Referrals to other Campus Support Systems

Disability Services and Programs (DSP)
Disability Services and Programs (DSP) provides support services to enable students with disabilities to develop their academic potential, while having the dignity of working toward an independent lifestyle. Services for students with physical, psychological and learning disabilities include:

  • Assistance in providing readers, scribes, note-takers and interpreters
  • Advocacy with faculty

Library Instruction
Librarians at USC offer library instruction to build on the university’s mission to educate students—from freshman to postdoctoral researchers—by supporting their development as scholars and enhancing their experience as lifelong learners. A key instructional service is course-based library instruction, in which a librarian provides customized training for a class in finding, accessing and using course-specific research materials.

Please visit http://www.usc.edu/libraries/about/instruction/ for more information or contact Avril Cunningham, the instruction coordinator at avrilc@usc.edu or (213)740-2654.

New Student Intervention Programs
The program is designed to assist first-time enrolled freshmen and undergraduate transfer students. Information concerning academic support, counseling, advisement and other services are electronically emailed to every first-time enrolled student throughout each fall semester. Students have the opportunity to meet in-person or communicate via email with experienced staff members at the University. Staff members can provide assistance with any number of valuable resources that are available on campus. Additional follow-up information concerning academic performance from the fall semester and referrals are provided during the beginning of the spring semester, if needed, to students and their academic advisors in various schools.

For more information on the Academic Intervention Program, visit their website or email study@usc.edu.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Supplemental Instruction is an academic program designed to improve students’ academic performance and increase retention. The SI program targets traditionally difficult courses and provides regularly scheduled, peer-led study sessions. These sessions are available to all students enrolled in the class at no cost. This program is brought to you by the USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences.  For more information about this program and how to get involved, please visit the website at http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/si/

Undergraduate Research Clearinghouse
USC is a research institution and thus many faculty members benefit from having undergraduates as research assistants. The Undergraduate Research Clearinghouse provides information on undergraduate research opportunities, academic honors programs, financial support, and a forum for the dissemination of student accomplishments.

The Clearinghouse is a matchmaking forum where students submit their information and faculty who are willing to take on undergraduate research assistants submit information about their research. When a match is found, contact information is given to both parties.
Visit the clearinghouse in Grace Ford Salvatori Hall, Suite 227, or call them at (213)740-1741. Their website http://www.usc.edu/programs/ugprograms/ugresearch/index.shtml has more information.

Undergraduate Success Program (USP)
The Undergraduate Success Program is dedicated to supporting students who have graduated from the University of Southern California’s Neighborhood Academic Initiative program and have been admitted to the university as NAI Scholars. This group of primarily first-generation college students is admitted to the university after completing a rigorous course of study throughout their middle and high school years in the NAI program, which is offered to residents in USC's surrounding community. These studies include college enrichment courses and an intensive Saturday Academy held at the USC campus that focuses on writing and math.

Serving as a crucial link between the NAI scholars and the USC community, USP provides individual referrals to faculty and other university resources that offer specialized assistance with various issues. Additionally, students may participate in the USP mentoring program, which pairs incoming NAI scholars with advanced scholars who can assist with issues related to the transition to college and guide students with the insights they have gained through their experiences and successes at USC. Through these various services, the Undergraduate Success Program is committed to assisting NAI scholars as they pursue their career goals.

For more information on the Undergraduate Success Program, visit their website or call the Center for Academic Support at (213)740-0776.

Undergraduate Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Work
The Undergraduate Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Work provides undergraduates with the unique opportunity to exhibit and share examples of their significant research and creativity with the university community. Students may present work in a variety of ways, such as through poster/panel sessions, art exhibits, and electronic media.

An awards ceremony recognizing the most outstanding projects takes place at the end of each symposium and includes cash prizes. It is sponsored by the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

Visit http://www.usc.edu/programs/ugprograms/ugsymposium for more information.

The Writing Center
The USC Writing Center is a student-centered, non-grading facility that exists to help students to become better writers. One of its main functions is to provide a place where writers and can sit and talk with an experienced writer about writing.

The Writing Center employs graduate students to work with writers on a one-on-one basis and in workshops, helping them at any stage of the writing process. Writing consultants are specially trained to work with students at all levels, both native and non-native speakers of English. Students can make individual consultations or attend one of the grammar, style, and skill workshops.

For more information contact the Writing Center at (213)740-0231, or writing@usc.edu. You can also visit their website at http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/writingcenter/
