Organization/Department: Order of the Torch
Description: One of the highest honors the university can bestow upon its students, the Order of the Torch is composed of 12 individuals who exemplify Trojan excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, commitment to USC, public speaking skills, and an ability to communicate the USC experience to others. Members serve as ambassadors for the university, promoting USC and the Trojan family to current students, prospective Trojans, alumni, the academic community, and the public. The Order of the Torch was first announced in 1987 but has its roots in Homecoming traditions dating back to the 1940s.
Arising out of the more traditional roles of Homecoming King and Queen, today’s Mr. and Ms. USC serve as spokespeople for not only the Order itself but the larger university student body. The selection process is competitive and demanding, with candidates first submitting applications including essays to be considered for interviews. After the interview stage, applicants have the chance of progressing to the public speech that is the final round for consideration into the Order of the Torch. Mr. and Ms. USC are then selected from within the Order.

| REAL Project 2008-2009 |
Organization/Department: The REAL Project
Description: Thank you for your interest in the Redefining Engagement in Active Leadership or the REAL Project. REAL is a new leadership program designed to help rising student leaders sharpen their leadership skills and gain invaluable knowledge of some of the social issues affecting the United States today. To achieve these goals, REAL follows the Social Change Model of leadership development, a new paradigm created by the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute (HERI).
The Social Change Model views leadership as a learning process rather than an elected position and regards ALL students as capable potential leaders. It emphasizes a stronger sense of self-awareness, collaboration and active participation to bring forth social change. As such, REAL combines leadership development and educational workshops, along with a culminating leadership project that enables program participants to implement the skills learned as a cohort. This final program will revolve around the topic selected for the year.
For the 2008 cohort, the issue pre-selected as the emphasis of the program is University Campus Climate. The educational workshops and program literature will explore issues of diversity, student perception, multiculturalism, and institutional programs to familiarize participants with different views on the subject. In addition, a panel that includes USC staff and faculty along with community organizers has been scheduled to start the program. This panel is open to program participants and the entire USC community.
Once again, thank you for your interest in the REAL Project. If you have any questions regarding the program do not hesitate to contact the program coordinators at uscreal@usc.edu. We look forward to reviewing your application! |
