How Tutoring Works
  1. Student completes a Tutor Request Form.
  2. Upon completion of the Tutor Request Form the student will receive an email with a link to our Online Directory of Available Tutor Subjects and Tutor Consultation Hours. *The online directory is updated every Friday for any schedule changes for the following week*
  3. First meeting with Tutor: The student will select the Tutor(s) based on his/her needs. Based on the Tutor(s) available consultations hours, the student will meet with the tutor in the Center for Academic Support Office to establish the needs, discuss the Tutoring Plan and exchange contact information.
  4. Tutor Session: If student requires tutoring outside of the times posted in the Tutor Hours Schedule they will have to arrange those times directly with the Tutor. *Limit of 2 hours per week per subject*
  5. ALL tutor sessions MUST occur in a quiet PUBLIC place (dorm study areas, library, classroom, etc.). Sessions MUST NEVER take place in your apartment/room.
  6. Please be respectful of your Tutor’s time. If you are unable to keep your appointment please contact your Tutor directly as early as possible, and/or the Tutoring office.

Tutoring & Tutorial Staff

Tutoring is available in a variety of subjects such as Math, Chemistry, Biology, and Statistics. Tutors are highly qualified upper-division and graduate students who are participants in a nationally certified tutor training program. Tutors are hired to provide specialized instruction in individual subject areas. Tutors will help students understand their preferred learning style and demonstrate ways to apply that learning style to a content area in order to improve class performance. Tutors focus on how a student learns rather than just arriving at a correct answer. Ultimately a tutor's goal is to help students become an independent learner. Becoming an independent learner means a student will understand the learning process and acquire the necessary skills to problem solve.

Learning Assistants

Learning assistants work with students to develop specific study skills and strategies as they apply to coursework at USC. Working with a learning assistant will help students to sharpen their test taking and time management skills as well as exam preparation. An additional area that Learning Assistants work with students is in constructing papers and understanding the writing process.
